Thetford Priory, Thetford, Norfolk

English Heritage control the extensive remains of one of the most important
East Anglian monasteries, the Cluniac Priory of Our Lady of Thetford. Founded
in the early 12th century, it owed much of its prosperity to a miraculous appearance
of the Virgin Mary, whose statue here was discovered to conceal relics of saints,
and became a magnet for pilgrims. Two of the greatest men in early Tudor England,
Thomas Howard, victor of Flodden, and Henry Fitzroy, illegitimate son of Henry
VIII, were buried near her shrine.
Survivals include the lower walls of the church and cloister, along with the
impressive shell of the priors' lodging and, reached by a pathway from the main
site, an almost complete 14th-century gatehouse. Information panels guide you
around the priory .
Open all year 10.00-17.00 (or dusk) daily. 25th Dec Closed
FREE entry!
Located on the W side of Thetford, near the Railway Station

Weeting Castle, Weeting, Near Brandon, Norfolk

English
Heritage control the ruins of this substantial early medieval moated manor house,
built in local flint.
Weeting Castle is a 12th century ruin with a three story high tower in Weeting,
Norfolk, near Brandon. Despite the name, it is not a castle but actually a fortified
manor house. It has a large open hall and an attached two-storey chamber block.
There's a domed brick ice-house on the northwest corner of the moat and a small
car park next to the church. The moat was added in the 14th century. The place
is thought to have been abandoned in 1390.
Open all year at any reasonable time Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, & Sun.
How much does it cost? It's FREE!!
Located 2 miles N of Brandon off B1106 - MAP
