London - Three Free Things Coming Up in London Soon
The UK has a constant stream of diverse and exciting cultural events, especially over the summer. While, unfortunately, a number of these events can come with a hefty price tag attached, there are a lot of free opportunities happening regularly. Most museums in London are free to visit all the time, meaning that an unbelievable amount of art, history, science and culture are accessible at all times, but sometimes you might want to engage with something new and different, so here's a list of just three exciting things happening this summer.
Notting Hill Carnival28 & 29 August
Notting Hill Carnival has been held every year since 1966, and is the largest festival of its kind in Europe. Based in West London and a celebration of the diversity and multiculturalism of the UK, it attracts over 1 million revelers every year. With over 40 sound systems, colorful parades, and a massive range of delicious Caribbean food, there's enough to keep everyone entertained.
Natural Soundscapes of Britain22 April - 4 September
Based at the Southbank centre, this event offers an opportunity to experience something quintessentially English in London - the countryside. Walk around the walkways and corridors of the Southbank centre and experience sounds recorded across all seasons and all parts of the UK from the spring songs of woodland birds to the call of seals in winter. Why not get away from the noise of traffic and the rush of the city and escape to a rural bliss?
Open House London17 & 18 September
If you've ever walked around London, you'll have seen countless architectural wonders lining the streets. For most people, the outsides of these impressive and interesting buildings is all they'll ever get to see, but Open House London offers a chance to go inside these buildings - from all periods and styles of architecture - for absolutely free. A citywide celebration of place, building and community, it's a perfect way to literally get underneath London's skin.
All of these events celebrate the diversity of England in different ways, and offer a chance to get a feel for the true cultural life that London is world-famous for. What better way than to re-engage with the UK's diversity than to learn a language, whether that means developing existing skills or picking up something completely new? The array of language schools London has to offer is mind-blowing, and there's definitely something for everyone out there.
It's always worth keeping an eye on some of the many free magazines and websites listing events in London for something fun to do at the weekend.
