Chart Gunpowder Mills, are the oldest of their kind in the world. Explosives manufacture began in Faversham in the 16th century and by 1900 it was the main centre of the UK industry, with plants producing gunpowder, TNT and dynamite. Within 35 years all the factories had closed but one gunpowder mill was left - at Chart Mills.
