What do you think of when you hear the word ’museum’? Does it conjure up glass cases, having to be quiet, being serious and certainly not touching anything? Well that’s not what we think that the Highland Folk Museum is about.
Our ‘Glass case’ is our 80 acre, one mile long site where the largest objects are our recreated, carefully relocated and interpreted buildings. We want visitors of all ages to have a fun, perhaps nostalgic, experience where they can have the ‘craic’ with our staff, perhaps have a go at an activity or craft, feel the weight of an object, experience the ‘reek’ of peat or just enjoy a walk through the site looking out for red squirrels.
Families can spend 3-5hrs exploring the Museum, and there are picnic and play areas, café and shops on site to cater for all needs.
Opening: Easter to August 10:30 to 17:30
Sept & Oct: 11:00 to 16:30

Boat of Garten Community Garden,
Boat of Garten, Highlands
(Adjacent to the Strathspey Railway which is PH24 3BH)
Picnic Spot - Boat of Garten Community Garden - Iif you're in Boat of Garten, the community garden in the centre of the village by the Strathspey Steam Railway is a tranquil and safe place to stop and have your packed lunch or grab a great coffee from the nearby village shop.
The garden was created and is maintained by the village residents and is accessible for all abilities. The Boat, as it is fondly known, got it's name from the ferry that was used to cross the River Spey from the area of Garten. It has long since been replaced by a bridge. The Speyside Way, a Free walk following the River Spey, passes through this delightful village as does the Sustrans Cycle track 7.
